[Text reads: Hey girl. The social constructedness or arbitrariness of what we declare to be a “private” or highly sexualized part of our body becomes abundantly apparent when we consider how different time periods and different cultures have very different ideas of what those private parts should be and how they should be “decently” concealed. For example, I bet you never knew how sexy ankles could be.]
Many readers have drawn attention to the way in which the last post [now removed - placed below the cut by request] failed to fight racism, but rather reinforced racism and white privilege by carelessly using a cismale white man’s image to argue for an anti-racist sex positivity and treating Slut Walk as though it had responded to criticisms from women of colour.
I am saddened by this response, but accept all these criticisms as valid.
Self-proclaimed sluts who are also women of colour have expressed similar sentiments to me as those which I articulated in the post, but I see how without the proper context this can be offensive and denigrating. I mistakenly universalized certain women’s positions; I will endeavour to be more sensitive to the complexities of race and sexuality in future.
I thank these readers for their insightful criticisms and invite more (as they arise) in future.
Thank you! This is my contribution to humanity. :-D
